WEIGHTS AND MEASUREMENTS

(1). DIRECT WEIGHING <LOOSE STONES>

(2). ESTIMATION BY FORMULA <MOUNTED>

Fun TIP: "CARAT" => Came from the word CARAB SEED

diamond => Came from word "ADAMAS" - unconquerable

MEASURING DEPTH FOR MOUNTED STONE

*For depth from table to culet when stone is mounted use refractive index by looking through microscope measuring visual distance from table to culet by focusing in and out and moving focus nob up and down with a ruler measuring distance on side of microscope take average depth x refractive index the depth of the stone. Gives you DEPTH OF STONE.

Loupe Grading

The higher the power of the loupe , the depth of the stone field is shorter (everything becomes larger)

1 inch with 10 power loupe one inch stone away from loupe depth of field long.

1 inch with 20 power loupe 1/2 inch from stone depth of field shorter.
